Can this unit be used to replace an old model number 9092 that vents into our attic?

A. The housing on the NuTone QT9093WH is larger than that with the 9092. However, the product is more efficient and, if you are willing to expand the housing area, it would be a great replacement option. If you want a more direct replacement, you will want the NuTone 9093WH.
