Whynter 14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner I bought this portable while my fiance was on a business trip. We have a strange layout in our home and have had in the past several air conditioners going at one time to cool the house( very costly and noisy). He was very skeptical when installing which was very simple. The first day it was 92 degrees in Wisconsin. We set it on 70 early in the morning and by 1:00 PM the house was cool.We did use our ceiling fans to circulate the air flow.Night sleeping was great because it was quiet.Got the first electric bill and was surprised the cost had gone down. He now calls me a smart shopper! November 4, 2011
Really good I just dumped my worthless window unit and decided to get this on the recommendation of my co-worker. Not disappointed so far. This Whynter a/c works really well in my small bedroom. It can actually get the room cold, something my window unit could never do. Granted it's much larger but you don't have to stress about the window unit falling out onto the street below. That actually happened to me before. Happy. July 31, 2011
Poor Product Whynter AC lasted two short summers, our summers are less than two months long. We got about 4 months worth of cooling out of the AC. Rotating compressor wheel broke on the first day of using it this summer. Costs almost as much to ship and fix as to buy a new one. Company response for service is practically non-existant. Worked great while it worked if you think getting about 4 months worth of cooling for the cost is worth it. I wouldn't recommend the Whynter ACs. My Maytag portable AC from 8 years ago on the other hand still works like new in the other room. Too bad Maytag no longer makes portable ACs, I would buy another one in a heart beat. June 4, 2011
For me, positive results! I waited a while, 6 weeks, to make this review. I wanted to see the unit's performance over time. Maybe I'll have a different opinion this time next year, but let me just say for now, it's made a tremendous difference. My home is cooler, and my electric bill was cut by nearly 60% (my central air doesn't kick in because the ARC-14S cools the place enough that it rarely turns on, even in the July heat.) It's quiet enough, and it has a sleek modern design. To me, this makes it worth it! Nothing is perfect and this too has it's downside - (fortunately these are things I can live with). The tubes to the window are a bit awkward, and the window screen are a bit flimsy, but I made a second guide out of cardboard to reduce cool air leakage, and use good old duct tape to seal this up. (Yes, duct tape in the living room - deal with it!) The unit is big - been trying to figure out how to make it seem less conspicuous. But, my priority is for cool, and a curtain covers the duct tape so this is manageable. While others in my family have considered building a tray for the front and making it a side table, I appreciate the sleek design. And the lower bills. Finally, when I reviewed materials before buying this, I was under the impression that you didn't need to empty any waterpans because moisture vents out. Thought I've not had to do that, the directions make mention that this might need to be done. (Maybe I just jinxed myself.) All in all, money well spent. July 25, 2009
Wonderful with one exception First of all shipping speed was AMAZING from these guys...super fast. Although looking in the air intake hole you can see smashed heat exchanger fins from a hard fall in storage or shipping. Works fantastic so far with one exception. There is a strong negative pressure system in the room. I duct taped over some slots that were below the intake hose so no room air was used, but still has a minor negative pressure. Other than that it is excellent. rolls nice, cools very cold very quick, easier on power consumption than most others and exhausts all the condensation out the exhaust. Over all very happy. Hope this helps others since I couldnt find a review anywhere! May 23, 2009
